Michael Lin specializes in the production of large-scale public works of art that have appeared in a variety of forms, such as floors, walls, and beds. He always works with spaces and creates complementary “collaborations” between the space and the work, as well as invites the audience to interact with his work, whether it is through walking within or onto the work, or even lying on top of it, to change the audience’s passive form of viewing art. Also, because his works are based on fabrics from daily life, visitors cannot help lingering longer as his works always exude the friendliness and warmth of a space to inhabit.

In this exhibition, Lin creates a paradise within the bookstore by creating a three-dimensional installation with wallpaper. He continues in the spirit of minimalism, turning away from the emphasis on composition and self-expression of traditional paintings. Minimalist works tend to see painting itself as an object, as well as generate dialogue and relationships with its surrounding environment. Thus there are no special connections between the elements in minimalist works, just the representation of a repeating pattern. He involves the audience in the construction of the work so that the work will eventually have no specific restrictions. Lin deliberately uses the “patchwork” method in this three-dimensional artwork, and eliminates the relationship of the patterns to one another. What he intends to do is not only display beautiful and lively patterns, but to use these patterns to attract audiences into the world he’s created. Visitors will not only become part of the work, but to observe the dialogue between the painting and space, and then contemplate, “What is a painting.”

About Michael Lin

Michael Lin is an artist living and working in Shanghai, Taipei and Brussels. Lin turns away from painting as an object of contemplation toward one of painting as a bounded, physical space, one we can settle into and inhabit (Vivian Rehberg). Lin orchestrates monumental painting installations that re-conceptualize and reconfigure public spaces.

Using patterns and designs appropriated from traditional Taiwanese textiles, his works have been exhibited in major institutions and international Biennials around the world such as the Lyon Biennial (2009), Vancouver Art Gallery (2010), Singapore Biennial (2011), Towada Art Center (2011), and most recently in 2012, major solo exhibitions at the Peabody Essex Museum (Massachusetts, USA) and the Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai, China). Transforming the institutional architecture of the public museum, his unconventional paintings invite visitors to reconsider their usual perception of those spaces, and to become an integral part of the work, giving meaning to its potential as an area for interaction, encounter, and re-creation.
