Scene of Border─LAI Chih-Sheng at 13th Biennale de Lyon

LAI Chih-Sheng is going to participate in the 13th Biennale of Lyon. One of his works to be exhibited is Border_Lyon, a site-specific installation on which the spectators can walk and view the surroundings from alternative standpoints. His works will be exhibited in the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, from 10 Sept 2015 to 3 Jan 2016.

The 13th Biennale of Lyon is entitled "La vie moderne." With "modern" as the keyword, the director Thierry Raspail plans to hold three serial exhibitions in 2015, 2017, 2019. Ralph Rugoff, the director of Hayward Gallery in London, is invited to serve as the guest curator this year. Rugoff invites 60 artists from 28 countries to create works in response to the connections between the ambiguity of "modern" and contemporary ways of life. Moreover, Rugoff emphasizes that a successful exhibition must allow the spectators to come up with new thoughts or connections. Therefore, instead of offering merely an artwork for appreciation, the artists he invited are competent to create, directly or indirectly, channels for communication with or amongst the spectators.

LAI's works integrate the spirits of minimalism, sensibility, and sensitivity, ranging from (site-specific) installations, sculptures, paintings, images, etc. By examining the establishments and crevices of social and artistic institutions, LAI offers his spectators exceptional perspectives to reflect on their routinized perceptions and actions. His latest solo exhibition, "Scene," was highly acclaimed and just concluded at ESLITE GALLERY in this July. He also participated in such international exhibitions as "The 8th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale: We Have Never Participated" at Shenzhen OCT Contemporary Art Terminal in 2014, and "Invisible: Arts about the Unseen 1957-2012" at Hayward Gallery in 2012.
