Eslite Gallery announces a new solo exhibition by SZETO Keung to present the artist’s recent works from the past four to five years, as well as a retrospective of previous works. Categorized as trompe l’oeil, SZETO Keung’s paintings are an optical illusion created by the artist’s unparalleled manipulation of light and color. Using the scientific spirit of observation and mimicry of Western realism, SZETO takes his art further by infusing in it his pursuit of Eastern philosophy. Recently the artist has shown a unique Oriental romanticism that is a blend of photorealism, abstract impressionism and extreme minimalism. “The new works are essentially unsent ‘love letters,’ delineating my pursuit for love, for people, for my homeland and for religion,” said the artist. Though fraught with anxiety and frustration in his pursuit, the artist presses on in order to narrate and express his deepest longings.

Roses that often appear in SZETO’s paintings remain a symbol of the artist’s emotions in the new works. They are sometimes in full bloom and at other times merely a decaying petal, suspended in a state of endless loneliness. Moreover, the background in his recent works is no longer tranquil, but filled with a sense of violent turbulence, like the rain band of a typhoon. Since 2007, Szeto Keung has also focused on themes such as the black hole, galaxy, nebula, light, butterfly, sacred relic (sarira) and remembrance in his paintings. Szeto says his persistent pursuit for the ideal world stems from the defeats he has encountered in love and life. Propelled by a powerful sense of anxiety and unrest, he dives into the world of art in the hope of reemergence with a new faith. His recent works indeed show the artist’s endeavor in using color and spatial arrangement to express the metamorphosis of his mind. The sacred relic and light signify Szeto’s yearning for salvation, as he journeys alone in the vast universe, hovering between the black hole, galaxy and nebula.
