Over thirty works will be featured in this first solo exhibition of the artist in Taiwan, including his best known human sculptures made of acrylic paint on terracotta that portray youths in contemporary, urban Japan.

Born in 1967 in Otsu City, Japan, Kitagawa studied sculpture at sculpture at Kanazawa College of Art. Subsequently he furthered his study in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy, and stayed there for fourteen years before returning to his homeland Japan. Deeply influenced by Italian masters such as Alberto Giacometti, Kitagawa’s works are in fact a complex blend of the Eastern and the Western, the classical and modern, the realist and abstractionist that brings forth a uniquely contemporary Japanese aesthetic. As art critic André Lee observes, “his urban subjects have by all outward manner and appearance grown up in an age of plenty, and despite their beautifully fashionable and youthful appearance, hidden within the facial expressions and body posture, for all their graceful elegance, a vague gloominess, alienation, dissatisfaction and unease is revealed.” “The helplessness and uncertainty manifest on their faces is a pointed expression of vexation of a generation of young Japanese fallen victim to the bubble economy, a youthful example illustrative of Japan’s lost generation.” Yet at the same time, the sculptures embody the artist’s hope in Japan’s youthful generation to revive the country’s energy and march into a new era of change.
