Curated by CHIN Ya-Chun and collectively entitled “Zuowei yizhong liwaiyuxianshide zhuangtai” (Exception to the Reality), these shows explore and pay homage to unsung heroes – the spaces and objects that undergo frequent contact. This will be LIAO and LAI’s second collaboration with the gallery, and LEE’s third.

The works of LAI Chih-Sheng (b. 1971) are inspired by items and spaces overlooked in everyday life. In Lifesize Sketch, he creates a two-dimensional work spanning one of the gallery rooms by highlighting the room’s architectural lines. Instead of the usual method of injecting emotions into artwork, he leads viewers on a path of awareness of the space they occupy. Past works by LIAO Chien-Chung (b. 1972) incorporated foreign objects that he understood on a more superficial level, such as a Harley Davidson motorcycle in a past work called God Damn Life. In this exhibition, he utilizes Taiwanese objects that he relates to culturally. One of his installations entitled Garbage Truck is a life-size wood re-creation of the vehicle’s back. A sight known to most Taiwanese citizens, it is an object that is needed by society, yet feared for its waft and filth. LEE Ji-Hong (b. 1972) explores body, space, and time in a variety of ways in his videos. Leap shows the artist jumping down from the roof of a two-story building, using his body to both measure and experience the height of the building. For this trio of artists, the inanimate wallflowers of society are cast as protagonists in their works.

All three artists are graduates of the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of Art in 1995 and 1996. LEE also received a master’s degree from the College of Visual and Performance Art of Long Island Institute.

LAI Chih-Sheng

LAI Chih-Sheng's work is not based on artistic technique but conceptual practice that imparts his audience a familiar yet new experience that is both immediate and poetic. Born in 1971 in Taipei, LAI's recent solo exhibitions include "An Exception to Reality—LAI Chih-Sheng" (ESLITE GALLERY, Taipei, 2011), "Instant" (IT Park Gallery, Taipei, 2013). In 2012, his work Life-Size Drawing was invited to participate in "Invisible: Art of the Unseen 1957-2012" (Hayward Gallery, London, 2013).
