If it be your will That I speak no more

If it be your will That I speak no more If it be your will That I speak no more If it be your will That I speak no more

Art-making is a journey fraught with struggle, doubt and pain; it also fuels passion, rapture and a sense of being. From their broken hills, artists surrender and rejoice, forging their paths in silence and solitude.

David DIAO

David DIAO is deeply influenced by New York's abstract painting trend in the 1960s, and he has been striving to expand the limitations of the abstract forms. He came to create conceptual painting that is emblematized and features intellectual debate and self-reflexive qualities.

Born in Chengdu, China in 1943, DIAO moved to Hong Kong in 1949, and in 1955, he left for New York, where he came to settle down and obtain his bachelor's degree in philosophy. During the 1960s and 1970s, his works mainly explored the varying possibilities of formal composition and inclined to geometric abstract art. At that time, he was one of the very few Chinese artists having won recognition in the West. However, he gradually learned that abstract art could not satisfy his desire to respond to the surrounding reality and history through painting. In the late 70s, he halted painting, went to Paris for new inspiration, and conducted comprehensive research on the linguistic features of modernist painting. In 1984, DIAO returned to New York art scene with the work Glissement, bringing into his painting his concerns for the surroundings. Thus, he found a way to break through the fossilized formalism in abstract art. Letters and characters, diagrams, and statistics became his painterly languages, and his lines of thinking often developed in the contexts of art history, linguistics, and sociology. He appropriated, simulated, and juxtaposed the symbols of such art giants as Franz Kline and Barnett Newman. Also, he exercised analysis and critique on art history and art market, with his own resume and sales record also becoming the target of self-ridicule. Particular insight and sense of humor scintillate in his work.

In late 1980s when postcolonial issues became ever more heated, DIAO also began to dissect his own subjectivity as a Chinese immigrant and artist in the West, in the way he analyzed the iconic artists. In the series about Da Hen Li and Hong Kong, he employs the materials and images from his families as well as the celebrity image such as Bruce LEE to trace his childhood memory in Chengdu and Hong Kong. Along the way, the construction of his own culture and ideology is re-examined as well. For David DIAO, his painting is concerned with process art rather than something mysterious. As he said, "If what you're doing can be reconstituted by the viewer, you're dealing the viewer into the image."

Fu-sheng KU

Fu-sheng KU was born in Shanghai in 1934 and came to Taiwan when his father General KU Chu-tung brought the entire family over with the Nationalist Army in 1948. Like many other artists, KU took to drawing at a young age. When graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at Taiwan Normal University, he had already participated in the exhibitions of Fifth Moon Group, becoming one of the key figures promoting modern art in Taiwan. Kenneth Hsien-yung PAI, prominent writer and a close friend, remarks that art is a passionate and persistent pursuit for KU. "If everyone must choose a way of life, painting is my whole life—my thoughts are in my work, and so are my feelings and every detail of my existence." KU faces his art with utmost honesty. Indifferent to trends in art, he prefers to indulge himself in the subconscious world between reality and fiction, allowing his fantasies and dreams to flow spontaneously. Naturally inspired by anything or any situation, his creations spring from his inner sense; time, place, material, color, and lines can all be used as vehicles for expression. KU readily twists his media in rich and diverse ways, gracing his works with whimsical and unconstrained fun and beauty.

Exploring the meaning of life, KU's creation centers around "man" as a vital subject, so that his oeuvre can be associated with modernist and existentialist philosophy. As curator Chia Chi Jason WANG once commented, "Fu-sheng KU's creative enlightenment began with the individual's 'body' and he strives to capture the 'present.' Depictions of distortion and deformation are commonly found in his art." Many of KU's human bodies are deformed and elongated, a style that is unique and impressive even today for its visual convulsion and emotional infectiousness. Fu-sheng KU says, "I paint man's inner self as well as his feelings towards the outer world; man's relationship with man, or man's relationship with his surrounding environment and nature. Life is a riddle and a dream. Life is fragile." The complexity of human nature, interpersonal parting, the mysteriousness and desires of the body, and the dream and reality of life... these are the ideas that pervade his art. KU's works exude a rich literary quality, constantly reflecting on the issues of human existence and infused with intense feelings and drama.

Fu-sheng KU's art can be roughly classified into different periods based on the cities he has lived in: Taipei period (1957-1961), Paris period (1961-1962), New York period (1963-1974), San Francisco period (1974-1990), Portland period (1990-2002), Chicago period (2002-2008), and Los Angeles period (2008-Present). In early works, headless bodies are enveloped in infinite solitude and bitterness. In works of the middle years are his contemplations of life and death as well as the juxtaposition of illusion and reality. The recent works now witness his liberation from all worldly restraints and sing praises of life with melodies from a blooming sanctuary. Fu-sheng KU's creative career illustrates a sincere artist's profound fascination in man, living and life in all its endearments.

Shida KUO

Shida KUO was born in Taiwan in 1959; he received his master in sculpture from New York University in 1992 and continues to work in New York. KUO is in search of forms that have a basic, pre-linguistic relationship to our bodies, forms that are "repressed by our consciousness but are persistent in our veins".

The choice of material is integral to the concept of KUO's art. He intentionally uses clay and wood to maintain a deeply felt affinity with that which makes us human. KUO insists that each work is individual and refuses to create within the constraints of series; he also refuses to enforce a title onto his work. The best way to appreciate his art, according to the artist himself, is to "live with it for some time".

The paintings KUO exhibited along the sculptures are to be viewed as an extension of the ceramic works and a continuous exploration of interior spaces. KUO treats his paintings as "flat sculptures", a term which accent its three-dimensional feature. KUO blends fiber, mica powder, and sand into acrylic paint to explore new creative possibilities, he also uses oil pastels for fine processing on his "flat sculptures".

KUO's simplified earthenware forms, richly tactile, talismanic, dense and hermetic, seem to allude to ancient knowledge, to wordless secrets that may be revealed through contemplative touching of the object. "By combining the organic quality of nature with the psychological ambiguities of the inner self, I seek to create my own vocabulary of forms which convey a spiritual perspective."

TSONG Pu

TSONG Pu was born in Shanghai in 1947 and came to Taiwan in 1949. After graduating from Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School in 1969, TSONG enrolled into La Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrio in 1973 and stayed in Spain for eight years in total. In 1981, he returned to Taiwan and helped found some spaces of contemporary art such as Studio of Contemporary Art (SOCA) and IT Park, and he also became one of the representatives of abstract art in Taiwan.

The basic unit of TSONG's painting is square stamp, by which he expresses the movement and self-autonomy of artistic ideas in the cubic or geometric hard-edge compositions. From grid dividing, stamping, to ordering, TSONG's stamp painting recalls the technique of pointillists, but he aims not at mimetic representation. Instead, he seeks, through his formal language, to express the dynamics that "one breeds thousands." The sequence and movement of the stamps and the varied density of colors reflect the artist's mindscape that is both self-regulating and freedom-loving. Recently, TSONG introduces daily ready-mades such as aluminum and paper into his stamp painting, so as to underscore the overlapping or confrontation of microscopic spaces. The ready-mades of varied textures and weights may slant on the canvas or give rise to other figures. They become the visual foci and perform changes amidst order and harmony. "Change is existence," said TSONG Pu. He has been regulating and simplifying his ideas and seeking differences in the same. He transforms everyday things into "rhetorical language and punctuations marks, making them poetic."

WANG Yuping

Born and raised in Beijing, Wang Yuping feels great affections for the south town he grew up in. In view of his passion for the common life of ordinary people, Feng Boyi refers his works to the plebeian version of the Japanese Ukiyo-e. WANG typically blends acrylic, oil pastel, oil paint on handcrafted paper, and according to Fan Di-an, this mixture allows the color patches to maintain their loose and random feature.

Lately WANG focuses on painting from life, with subjects ranging from the scenes of old Beijing to trivial objects such as books, jars, typewriter, and corks. WANG brings forward the intimate, calm, warm yet melancholy nature of ordinary objects. In his paintings there are no sharp lines, no accurate shape, no standard perspective. His subjects are reduced to clouds of saturated and pure color, and their fuzzy fringes make them seem as if they have been scrupulously caressed. According to YU Ding, it is the sincere wish to communicate with one’s surrounding environment that drives WANG to paint from life. It is also the artist’s personal choice to divert from trends in contemporary art that restlessly place focus on innovative media, languages, and styles. From 2004 to 2006 WANG returned to his alma mater Central Academy of Fine Arts of China to teach. As he painted along with his students, he found once again the pleasure of painting. He says: “In art today, there is too much talk of ideas and viewpoints, but my greatest pleasure is still painting in itself. When we are young and we pick up the brush for the first time and we start painting, it is because we love it. After all the years of training, study and reflection in art, however, painting is no longer as enjoyable as before. Over-emphasizing innovation has become a spiritual burden, and the pleasure we felt when we held the brush for that very first time has disappeared”. WANG’s works are the traces of his quest for genuineness in art.

KUO Chwen

KUO Chwen was born in Taiwan in 1965. He went to the National Taiwan Art School. Soon after his graduation from the School of Visual Arts in New York, he won the First Prize from The 3rd Annual Grand Award of “Prix de Paris”. He has participated times at the Taipei Annual Arts Competition.

KUO’s earlier works display all the characteristics of someone in the midst of change, someone seeking his own voice, letting go the austerity of his education without sacrificing the best of it. As the strong social criticism faded away, he turned to the exploration of the mind. A number of surrealist elements remain as he moved away from the powerful surrealism of his architectural works into a more macabre world.

The reoccurring theme in his work is the solitude of life, the purposeless of existence, and the blindness of love. An important image of his work is the blushed skulls that are characterized by their lively postures, playful expressions and lust in their eyes. The skull symbolizes death as the base of life, men ripped of their flesh and left with their bones. Sometimes the skeleton is presented along with mixtures of animal figures, which serves as a metaphor for the beastliness within men. Eyeballs are also frequently shown in his work, it presents the artist’s eye that is looking at reality and the virtual landscape of the mind.

A dream-like quality of his images suggests a literary-poetic nature in the artist. As he puts it: “I am very interested in Surrealism since it is my way to look into myself. This is the most important thing for me as an artist. I want to look at something in the ark areas within myself, you know, violence, cruelty, and so on. For me as an artist I have to explore the unconscious.”

As a strong believer of Art, he painted till the end until he died of cancer at the age of 46 in 2012, leaving us with his last exhibition, the “Floating Mind”.
